Your questions, answered.
Do I need officiating or playing experience?
No prior officiating or playing experience is required to express interest. The chapter provides training for new officials and can walk you through the requirements.
What training can I expect?
Learn from more than five chapter officials working Division I football, many working Division II, Division III, and junior college games, and many with multiple Texas high school state championship assignments. Training includes classroom instruction and on-field sessions. Visit our Training & Rules page for resources.
What is the time commitment?
You set your availability and do not have to work particular days. New officials begin with seventh- and eighth-grade and high school sub-varsity games. Sub-varsity evenings usually run from about 4:30 or 5 p.m. to 9 or 9:30 p.m., plus travel and pregame preparation. The chapter also works Friday-night varsity games; assignments depend on readiness and availability.
Where does the chapter officiate?
The chapter serves East Texas, from Texarkana to Lufkin. Travel depends on the assignment; ask us about the locations and opportunities available to you.
What will it cost, and how much do officials earn?
Budget approximately $150–$200 for a uniform, plus TASO state dues at the current registration rate. The chapter waives first-year local dues for new officials. Browse TASO’s authorized vendors for gear, and confirm your needs with us before ordering. Contact the chapter for current game pay and travel-payment details.
When can I start?
Send your interest form at any time to receive our welcome guide. Complete TASO football registration and pay state dues before moving forward with the chapter, then let us know so we can help you find the next appropriate training opportunity. Check the chapter updates on our homepage for published meeting information.
